In the long shadow of the famous Tower, Blackpool marathon runners patiently gathered. At 26.2 or 13.1 miles, the "big one" for the Blackpool marathoners would, for them, not be the white-knuckle ride at the pleasure beach. This new course would take the runners south to Starr Gate where they would double back to the North Pier. They then go off the main carriageway on to the lower walk all the way to Bispham. The course then doubles back on to the main carriageway rising slightly on to the upper walkway then the middle walk way. The Marathon bears left before the Metropole Hotel for another loop – the half marathon runners bearing right for their finish. The race start was delayed by 30 minutes held up by an all important water carrying wagon which unfortunately had broken down. The race had attracted runners from every corner of Britain with local runner's competing well in both distances. Conditions for distance running are very rarely this good at this time of year, the runners only feeling the heat in the sheltered stretch from the North Pier to Cleveleys. The Marathon winner was Nicky McGuiness in 2.29, wearing the number 1 on his vest Blackpool & Fylde athlete Brian Hall was 4th overall in 2.40. The first lady was Ilkley Harrier Sally Malir 3.10; Lytham's Emily Dennis ran an excellent race finishing 5th Lady in 3.21. Terry Webster of North Fylde was the 1st V55 with a well paced 3.12. The half Marathon was won in 1.11 by Scarborough's Jonathan Bateman, local running legend Paul Muller was 2nd in a comfortable 1.14. Cleveleys painter and decorator Peter Cruse who runs for Wesham was 8th with a strong 1.19. The first lady was Adela Salt of Newcastle Staffs in 1.21; the first local lady club runner was Kath Hoyer of Wesham in 1.41. All finishers received a well stocked goodie bag which included a good quality medal, race T-shirt, sandwiches ,energy drink, water and various other items. Credit must go to a well organised and executed race. Building on past experiences race manager Ron McAndrew has pooled together a well drilled team.
